Spectrum Boxing Monday Night Fights t-shirt

The first ever event at the Spectrum was a boxing match, between hometown hero Joe Frazier and Tony Doyle (Frazier won by KO in the 2nd round). By the mid 1970s, a boxing Renaissance in Philly was fully underway, with local pugilists like Matthew Saad Muhammad, Jeff Chandler, and Tyrone Everett becoming household names among Philly sports fans. The Spectrum was a daunting place for out of town boxers to come. The legendary Marvin Hagler lost two of his three career losses at the Spectrum.

The boxing buzz at the Spectrum was largely driven by boxing promoter J. Russell Peltz, and it was his Monday Night Fight promotion that really cemented Philadelphia as the capital of the boxing world in the 1970s. That honor was short-lived however. As casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas saw boxing as a way to lure gamblers, they began to take the big time fights away from Philly. And by the 1980s, the arena was better known for hoops and hockey than it was for the sweet science.
