During its time, the Blue Horizon was the undisputed champion of the boxing venue world. Residing just north of Broad St. and Girard Ave in North Philadelphia, the Blue Horizon played host to thousands of fights from 1961 until it was shuttered in 2010. It was actually built in 1865 as luxury apartments, but was soon sold to the Loyal Order of Moose to be used as one of their lodges. Then in 1961 it was bought by Jimmy Toppi who renamed it after the song “Beyond the Blue Horizon” from the 1930 film Monte Carlo. This era ushered in regular boxing matches including ones by prominent local fighters such as Bennie Briscoe, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Bernard Hopkins, and Tim Witherspoon.
